After a 30-year departure from fine art, Tara McCrackin returned to the studio in 2026 to launch Studio McCrackin, a homecoming shaped by decades of creative leadership and design inquiry.
Her path back to painting followed a distinguished career as an interior designer and educator, culminating in her tenure as President of Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. While her professional life centered on cultivating creativity in others, the pull toward her own studio practice remained steady beneath the surface.
That return required an embrace of uncertainty. Tara approaches each work without a predetermined outcome, allowing process to lead and discovery to unfold in real time. Experimentation and risk-taking are essential to her practice; an extension of a design philosophy rooted in exploration, iteration, and transformation.
Working on multiple pieces simultaneously, she responds intuitively as each work begins to “speak,” revealing its direction through layered gestures and material dialogue. Through monoprint, collage, and painting, Tara creates mixed media works that honor curiosity and celebrate the beauty of evolution.
studio mccrackin marks not a reinvention, but a continuation; an artist returning to the place where inquiry first began.
